Today I did the dreaded act of Googling myself. Something about seeing pages upon pages of yourself or lack thereof just terrifies some people. For me, I was scared that my results might be of another Ethan Ruoff who is a serial killer or a delivery man. Luckily for me, Ethan Ruoff is not a common name. Including me, there are only two of us and I am the superior one, online at least. When I Googled my name the first results were my social media pages. Surprisingly, my brand new blog (this one) came up next. From there I saw links to websites that I built. These included Jimmy’s Softserve and Irvington Diversity Foundation Inc. Under the images tab, I saw plenty of pictures of me and my sister from a karate photoshoot we did a few years ago. Then came my profile pictures. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my Googledentity.
After the basic google search, I decided to do more research. Since Google uses your cookies to customize your search, I also ran a search in private mode so it would show me the results a stranger would see. Surprisingly, they were the same. On Bing and DuckDuckGo, the results were slightly different. Their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) seemed to focus more on Ruoff than Ethan. The first few results were mostly the same but then it quickly went downhill. Around the second page, sex offender articles started popping up. To my relief, the Author is a Ruoff, not the offender.
By the end of college, I hope that on my Google results page there will be a website for my business. I also aim to bump the articles back to at least the third page. From there, I hope that my results take up the first two pages. Although my results are pretty good, there’s always room for improvement.
